Whilst other illustrators from Vogue’s classic period, such as Dryden and Benito, have become subsumed within the pantheon of fashion publishing, the work of berard remains reassuringly enigmatic. No other cover makes the period so familiar and alien in equal measure. Christian or ‘Bebe’ Berard was the antithesis of the world he portrayed. An antihero. Fat, grossly unkempt, addicted to opium, and with no interest in women. Yet his standing in London and Paris as an arbiter of taste was such that his approval could make or break the season for a couturier. He would paint furiously, converting drops of sweat which fell onto the paper into hats or giant flowers.
