VOGUE
The original arbiter of taste, Vogue was quite simply the definitive fashion magazine. As a record of ‘the moment’ it was unsurpassed. There are a number of high points during its long history which can be described as ‘era-defining’, and specific issues from these periods attract the most interest. 1910-1925 marked the belle epoque, represented through the exquisite covers of Dryden, Lepape and Benito. A Benito issue is likely to include gowns by Balenciaga and photographs by Beaton. DaDA and surrealism then influenced Vogue, culminating in the legendary covers of Berard and Dali. The 1940’s ended with arguably Vogue’s last golden period, with Bouche and Blumenfeld defining the mid-century look, and the transition to the moderne, the foundation of all derivatives today.

April 13 1938 Volume 90 No 31

Classic English edition with the legendary Berard cover. Exquisite design, with gowns by Lutyens’ and photography by Steichen. English edition has advertisements from Rolls-Royce, Harrods and Selfridge’s. All the new looks of the London season 1938. Comes complete with Vogue House & Garden book.
Whilst other illustrators from Vogue’s classic period, such as Dryden and Benito, have become subsumed within the pantheon of fashion publishing, the work of berard remains reassuringly enigmatic. No other cover makes the period so familiar and alien in equal measure. Christian or ‘Bebe’ Berard was the antithesis of the world he portrayed. An antihero. Fat, grossly unkempt, addicted to opium, and with no interest in women. Yet his standing in London and Paris as an arbiter of taste was such that his approval could make or break the season for a couturier. He would paint furiously, converting drops of sweat which fell onto the paper into hats or giant flowers. The March 1st cover is the apotheosis of the Berard enigma - an overgrown vaseful of giant flowers in a deep blue evening, transfigured with the melancholic heads of the courturier’s models - Ed
