MAN ABOUT TOWN

The influential spin-off from Tailor and Cutter, Man about Town, launched in 1953 with a combination of fashion and short stories, was the hot men’s mag of its time. Its mission statement was bold: “Accept then that this magazine is not produced in the interest of that huge majority the Editor. If, in an age where lump is a virtue and mass the king, this upsets you, then we are not so churlish as not to be sorry. But we are not very sorry.” Man About Town evolved into a blueprint for the type of men’s mag that would surface three decades down the line (GQ). In 1960 it was bought by Michael Heseltine, just then starting to make his name in publishing. The magazine’s name was shortened to About Town, then simply Town, and with this punchier title it adopted a racy, raffish tone in place of previous velvet-collared refinement. Folding in the 1960’s, Town developed a cult status. Collectors include Paul Smith.
