CASTLE. THE STORE

JoDD works between an architecture and art. Using found materials usually associated with the construction of a house - bitumen, stonedust and graphite - JoDD transforms such elemental materials into paintings on-site, whereby ‘everything remains in clearance.’

Against the grain of the modern aesthetic, JoDD’s vernacular paintings bring to mind the mud dwelling and Berber house: thick, dark walls or heavily walled exteriors with eyelets and apertures of brilliant light and colour.

He is a hybrid, nomadic, diasporic rendering. The cult of the surface is de-centered. Compositions of bold, luminous form and shape reveal a surface scarred, marked, cleared and re-made, hinting at much more nuanced layers of meanings relating to place and identity in contemporary Europe.

Born in Saterland, Germany, JoDD worked under the name Jankowsky from 1984. In 1994 there was a new beginning of artistic work as JoDD. Attributed as the founder of Transformelle Painting, he has exhibited internationally and has works in collections worldwide, including Poland and Russia. JoDD currently works and stays in Berne, Zurich, Locarno, Ascona, Logano, Porlezza, Mallorca, Milan and Paris.
