| JAKE & DINOS CHAPMAN |
Since exploding onto the erstwhile Brit Art scene in the 90’s with their recreations of Goya’s series of etchings, The Disasters of War, brothers Jake and Dinos Chapman have consistantly pursued a singular aesthetic which aims to unearth the contradictions and hypocracies present in contemporary culture, producing a formidable body of work which both fascinates and shocks. Challenging the very boundaries of taste, their trademark aesthetic is a phantasmagora of apocalyptic horror, mutated bodies and genitalia. In 2003, the Chapman’s doctored a set of Goya’s etchings (printed in 1937) with hand-painted cartoon heads, breaking the ultimate artistic taboo through the desecration of a celebrated work. The Chapman’s message, as always, delivered with shock and awe. CASTLE. offers two limited edition artworks by the Chapman’s, THE BIRTH OF IDEAS (2002) and DISASTERS OF WAR (2002). The job of a work of art is to raise questions about its terms and conditions. Thats what we do. We present the viewer with a puzzle. We put an injunction on speedy consumption, by refusing to offer a straightforward aesthetic experience. And to defend the integrity of the work, we produce a bit of turbulence that makes it more than a simple sip - of art. Jake Chapman By the time we die we will have done everything - flower arranging, pottery, origami... We have no signature style; the work is recognisable for its attitude, not its form.
