JOAN BROSSA

The discovery of the oeuvre of Joan Brossa (1919-1998) is a constant invitation for surprise. Brossa was the creator of a multifaceted art that eskewed convention. Forged in the 1940’s, his object poetry, plastic art, theatre texts and bibliophile books executed with artists such as Miro placed Brossa firmly within the Spanish avant-garde movement, whilst anticipating the conceptual art vogue of the 1960’s, and beyond. Above all, Brossa was an artist who used words to transfigure the essence of commonplace objects. He played with words, often single letters, with an almost obsessive conviction to conjure new and subversive meanings. Through his deconstructive art, Brossa confronted the tyrannies of time, bureaucracy and the emergent digital age.

The acknowledgment of Brossa is marked by the exhibition Joc i camins de Joan Brossa (“games and tracks of Joan Brossa”) at Al Museu es Baluard, Palma, until April 3rd, and to celebrate his oeuvre, CASTLE. offers three books by and about Brossa, in conjunction with Fundacio Joan Brossa.
